Frequently Asked Questions

Who Should Have A Will?

Any capable person in BC who owns property including real estate, vehicles, or other assets; has a dependent spouse or children, and wishes to have someone they know and trust take care of their estate should have a Will. As of March 31, 2014, the age at which you can make a Will was reduced from 19 years to 16 years of age.

Why Do I Need A Will?

One of the most important and caring things you can do for yourself and your loved ones is to prepare a legal Will so your wished are clear when you’re no longer here to express them.

Having a Will is the best way to determine who will look after dependent children and how your assets will be distributed after your death. A Will also designates an Executor (and an alternate) who will ensure your wishes are carried out legally and efficiently.

Without a Will, the Court will decide who the Executor will be, and the law will determine who gets your estate. If you have minor children, they could become wards of Children and Family Services until a guardian is appointed.

A Will protects you and your family members from unwelcome outside intervention, addresses potential differences in opinions or conflict, and gives you and your loved ones peace of mind.

What Should I Know Before Travelling With Children?

If you are planning to cross the border from Parksville, whether it is a hockey tournament or a theatre production, let’s ensure your children are well equipped for the journey.

Depending on your circumstance, each child must have written and notarized permission from both parents/legal guardians containing information about the trip stating the name of the child, the dates and purpose of travel, the name(s) of the accompanying adult(s), emergency contact information…basically, the more information the better.
